BJÖRK by Nobuyoshi Araki

Nobuyoshi Araki is a highly controversial photographer– a result of his notoriously erotic photographs, some of which portray tight binding, or “Kinbaku-bi”. His critics have fought for censorship of his images, especially in his native Japan, however he remains one of the country’s most prolific artists. Embedded within his work is an undercurrent of his country’s traumatic past. In his 2010 photo book Tokyo hōshasen (Tokyo Radiation), Araki altered the time stamp on each image to appear to have been taken between August 6-15th, linking the photos to the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Some images he developed at extremely high temperatures, causing the emulsion to reticulate and break apart as though they had been exposed to heat and radiation.

At Bjork’s request Nobuyoshi Araki photographed the cover and inner sleeve pages of her 1997 remix album, Telegram.
