Josue M. Pierre

Based in Kigali, Rwanda, Josue M. Pierre (b. 2001) is a contemporary figurative painter whose background began in ceramic arts and sculpture before transitioning to painting. His practice includes regular travel into the rural terrain of Rwanda, including Gicumbi, to experience local ecology firsthand. These inland excursions during his “off-canvas moments” directly shape the regional botanical elements integrated into his compositions.

Pierre utilizes an alla prima style, characterized by rapid, wet-on-wet paint application to maintain spontaneous creative energy. His conceptual approach centers on visual storytelling to explore narratives of modern African life. He translates philosophical dialogues with peers regarding shared memory, human transformation, and secondary chances into physical portraiture.
