Julien Spianti
French artist Julien Spianti configures his canvases as psychodramas, exploring the architecture of human memory and social ritual. Spianti’s practice actively courts conflict and ambiguity, translating ancient mythic structures into fragmented mindsets. His paintings balance abstraction and figuration creating eerie, dreamlike environments.
A shift in his approach developed following an interest in the relationship between authority and love, viewing the latter as a form of beneficial alienation. This dynamic is manifested through his subversion of standard portraiture, where faces are obscured or dissolved entirely into the surrounding medium.
By deconstructing physical space and erasing individual identities, Spianti intentionally removes the traditional boundaries separating the interior self from the exterior world. His process asks that the viewer navigate the unresolved tension between static contemplation and direct action, creating a space where the past and contemporary exist simultaneously.
