File Folders no. 3, Bodega, California, 2017

“In Emergent Behavior, photographer Thomas Jackson sets up various objects to mimic the self-organising behaviours exhibited by swarming locusts, termite mounds, schools of fish or flocks of birds. Suspended in air, Jackson’s installations are beautifully out of place in landscapes devoid of people. The objects he uses — cheap materials easily bought in stores like plastic cups, glow sticks or hula hoops — are a stark contrast against the carefully chosen locations. His installations are held up by structures, filaments and fishing lines, later removed from the image via Photoshop. In his project’s artistic statement, Jackson says, “The images attempt to tap the mixture of fear and fascination that those phenomena tend to evoke, while creating an uneasy interplay between the natural and the manufactured and the real and the imaginary. At the same time, each image is an experiment in juxtaposition.”
