The Wakhan Corridor

“The Wakhan Corridor, in far northeastern Afghanistan, is perhaps the only part of the country entirely untouched by the conflicts of the past 40 years. The disfunction that has gone hand in hand with the conflict, however—and the region’s remoteness—has ensured that services and infrastructure in the Wakhan have barely developed in that time. While the Agha Khan Foundation does good, grassroots work in the Wakhan, the singleroad into the corridor is better suited to mountain goats than the handful of motor vehicles that ferry residents to Ishkashim, the district centre, a 200km, day-long journey from the end of the road that few can afford.”
