“Ishii Nobuo’s works captures the imagination of the viewer instantly. His exaggerated figures float through the skies abyss. Kandinsky comes to mind as he attempted to convey through his artworks notions of consciousness and spirituality through space, colour and abstraction. Nobuo’s works evoke spirituality through space and colour as well. His figures are happy and playful, seeking pleasure in the mundane. As a Japanese artist, these works align with the long-standing tradition of Japanese painting and influences are apparent. Ink wash painting which derives from ancient Chinese practices have been used in Japan since the Tang dynasty. It is an expressionistic form of art as it focuses to capture the beauty of something rather than its reality. Again, Nobuo pulls from this notion to capture the spirit of joy happiness through simple acts (eating, hugging, sex, looking at the sky). He captures these small moments in time and elevates them to “holy” status. As ink painting sets to capture the spirit, so does Nobuo.”
